A Vala
Brazilian Portuguese originals
A enxada bate em pedra no segundo palmo.
O cabo vibra até o ombro.
Ele muda de canto
e abre outro buraco.
A terra de cima solta fácil.
Embaixo, vem barro escuro.
O suor entra no olho.
Ele limpa com o punho sujo.
No fundo da vala,
a água sobe sem pressa.
Ele tira com uma vasilha.
A água volta.
Cava um canal para o lado.
A lama fecha o caminho.
Põe duas pedras para apoiar o pé.
Uma delas some pela metade.
O vizinho observa por cima do muro.
Diz que ali sempre juntou água.
Ele não responde.
Mergulha a vasilha de novo.
À noite, deixa a enxada na beirada.
Na manhã de segunda,
a vala está cheia de novo.
A vasilha boia no canto.

The Trench
Translation · A Vala
The hoe strikes stone at the second handspan.
The handle vibrates up to his shoulder.
He moves to another spot
and opens another hole.
The topsoil comes loose easily.
Below it, dark clay appears.
Sweat runs into his eye.
He wipes it with a dirty wrist.
At the bottom of the trench,
water rises without hurry.
He bails it with a bowl.
The water returns.
He digs a channel to the side.
Mud closes the way.
He sets down two stones for his foot.
One disappears halfway.
The neighbour watches over the wall.
Says water has always gathered there.
He does not answer.
He dips the bowl again.
At night, he leaves the hoe on the edge.
On Monday morning,
the trench is full again.
The bowl floats in the corner.
