Cais do Avesso · O Porto das Coisas Que Não Partem · Portuguese original
O Peixe Que Ficou
Brazilian Portuguese originals
Depois da venda
a banca fica branca
gelo quebrado
escama na madeira
todos os peixes vendidos
menos um
O vendedor raspa a água
põe papel novo por baixo
o peixe continua ali
com os olhos fixos
o olho pega a luz
do toldo baixo
Uma mosca volta
a cada vez que ele espanta
ele abana o pano
uma vez só
o pano pinga
sobre a própria mão
O peixe perde a cor
devagar
sem pressa
o papel amarela
a água escorre
para a sarjeta
Alguém pergunta o preço
ele responde sem olhar
mas o cliente já foi
entre duas barracas
a pergunta fica
em cima da banca
No fim da feira
o peixe ainda está ali
mais baixo na água
mais claro por baixo
o vendedor apaga
a lâmpada pequena
Cais do Avesso · O Porto das Coisas Que Não Partem · Translation
The Fish That Stayed
Translation · O Peixe Que Ficou
After the sale
the stall turns white
broken ice
scales on the wood
all the fish sold
except one
The seller scrapes the water
puts new paper underneath
the fish remains there
with fixed eyes
the eye catches the light
from the low awning
A fly comes back
each time he drives it away
he waves the cloth
only once
the cloth drips
onto his own hand
The fish loses color
slowly
without hurry
the paper yellows
the water runs
toward the gutter
Someone asks the price
he answers without looking
but the customer is gone
between two stalls
the question stays
on top of the counter
At the end of the market
the fish is still there
lower in the water
paler underneath
the seller switches off
the small lamp
