A Caixa d'Água
Brazilian Portuguese originals
A caixa azul chega amarrada num caminhão.
Não passa pelo corredor.
Eles tiram o portão do trilho.
A caixa entra de lado.
Quatro homens levantam pela escada.
Um fica embaixo empurrando.
A borda raspa o reboco.
Fica um risco azul na parede.
A escada verga no terceiro degrau.
O homem do alto manda parar.
Eles apoiam a caixa no descanso.
As mãos ficam na corda.
No alto, ele gira a caixa até a saída do cano.
Aperta as conexões com a chave de grifo.
A fita branca sobra na rosca.
Ele corta com a unha.
Abre o registro e desce correndo.
A sola bate em cada degrau.
Na cozinha, a torneira cospe ar.
O cano sacode dentro da parede.
Depois vem água barrenta.
Ele enche um copo, joga fora.
Enche outro.
A água clareia devagar.
No joelho do cano, uma gota se forma.
Ele aperta mais um quarto de volta.
A gota volta.
Ele deixa uma caneca embaixo.

The Water Tank
Translation · A Caixa d'Água
The blue tank arrives tied to a lorry.
It will not fit through the passage.
They lift the gate off its track.
The tank enters sideways.
Four men raise it up the stairs.
One stays below, pushing.
The rim scrapes the plaster.
A blue mark remains on the wall.
The ladder bows at the third step.
The man above tells them to stop.
They rest the tank on the landing.
Their hands stay on the rope.
On the roof, he turns the tank towards the pipe outlet.
Tightens the fittings with the pipe wrench.
White tape protrudes from the thread.
He cuts it with his nail.
He opens the valve and runs downstairs.
His soles strike every step.
In the kitchen, the tap spits air.
The pipe shakes inside the wall.
Then muddy water comes.
He fills a glass, throws it away.
Fills another.
The water clears slowly.
A drop forms at the pipe elbow.
He tightens it another quarter turn.
The drop returns.
He leaves a mug underneath.
