At the mouth of night
the man walks the quay
with a large key
fixed to his belt
checks the lamps

near the stairs

then far too long
he stops beneath it

a dead insect
caught at the bottom
he takes the cloth
from his left pocket
He lifts his hand
to tighten the glass
the hand comes down
the glass stays loose
the wrong light
cuts the blue canvas
The lantern in his hand
is warm
but does not turn on
he uses the post light
to see where he steps
over the dark wood
When he goes on
the lamp continues
short-short-long
over the black water
tomorrow the hand will rise
and fall again
