Capivara
corta o remanso.
Sem pressa maior que a corrente.
Pelo escuro
guarda água
como pano pesado.
Desço até a beira mole
sentindo a argila ceder.
Uma orelha mexe.
Quase nada.
Dois filhotes
atrás do dorso
tão perto que o rio parece menos largo.
Um passa pela bota
deixa um círculo claro.
O corpo grande afunda aos poucos
sem estalo
sem aviso.
Só a linha do lombo some
onde o reflexo se quebra.
Quando levanto o olhar
a margem já é outra.
O mato fecha a trilha
antes que eu saia dali.

Translation · Capivara
Capybara
cuts the backwater.
With no hurry greater than the current.
Dark fur
keeps water
like heavy cloth.
I go down to the soft edge
feeling the clay give way.
An ear moves.
Almost nothing.
Two young ones
behind the back
so close the river seems less wide.
One passes by the boot
leaves a clear circle.
The large body sinks little by little
without crack
without warning.
Only the line of the back disappears
where the reflection breaks.
When I raise my eyes
the bank is already another.
The brush closes the trail
before I leave there.
