O sol bate branco na casca
volta em lasca nos olhos.
Uma cabeça menor aparece
entre ramos e sombra.
Abre o bico.
Nenhum som daqui de baixo.
O vento mexe só metade
do que sustenta o ninho.
Anoto a altura do tronco.
O resto se prende nos gravetos
onde a manhã fica presa
antes de cair no lodo.

Dry trunk in the middle of the bay
carries an enormous nest.
Crooked sticks against the brightness
higher than it seems.
Up there
the jabiru shifts legs.
Long beak pointing south
as if measuring distance
without leaving the same place.
The sun hits white on the bark
returns in splinters to the eyes.
A smaller head appears
between branches and shadow.
Opens its beak.
No sound from down here.
The wind moves only half
of what holds up the nest.
I note the height of the trunk.
The rest catches in the sticks
where morning gets trapped
before falling into the mud.
